Brainspotting
Two-Day Phase 1 Training
October 1 and 2, Berkeley, California--Contact www.holosinstitute.net
November 12 & 13 , 2011, Austin, Texas
14 CEU's for Counselors, Social Workers and Psychologists
Presented by: Robert Weisz, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist
Director, Brainspotting and Hypnotherapy Clinic of New Mexico
Brainspotting is a powerful, focused treatment method that works by identifying, processing, and releasing core neurophysiological sources of emotional and physical pain, trauma, dissociation, and a variety of other challenging conditions. Brainspotting is a simultaneous form of diagnosis and treatment, enhanced with Biolateral sound, which is deep, direct, and powerful, yet focused and containing.
Brainspotting gives us a tool, within the clinical healing relationship, to neurobiologically locate, focus, process, and release experiences and symptoms which are typically out of reach of the conscious mind and its cognitive and language capacity.
A “Brainspot” is the eye position which is linked to the energetic/emotional activation of a traumatic or emotionally charged issue within the brain.
Located by eye position, paired with externally observed and internally experienced reflexive responses, a Brainspot is actually a physiological subsystem holding emotional experience in memory form.
“Brainspotting is based on the profound attunement of the therapist with the patient, finding a somatic cue and extinguishing it by down-regulating the amygdala. It isn’t just parasympathetic nervous system activation that is facilitated, it is homeostasis.” -Robert Scaer, MD, The Trauma Spectrum .
Developed by David Grand, Ph.D., Brainspotting provides a neurobiological tool for accessing, diagnosing, and treating a wide range of somatic and emotionally-based conditions.
Training Seminar Objectives:
Through lecture, clinical demonstrations, small group practice and experiential learning, participants will be able to learn and work with the following:
--A practical and theoretical understanding of the elements and functions of Brainspotting.
--The application of “Outside Window” and “Inside Window” Brainspotting techniques.
--The utilization of Brainspotting with trauma, somatic conditions, emotional, behavioral and performance problems, and other health/wellness issues.
--Integration of Brainspotting into clinical practice.
--Applications of Brainspotting for resource enhancement and self-maintenance

The Neurobiology of Attuned Relationship in Therapy: Introduction to Brainspotting
JULY 29, 2011 in Tucson, Arizona 7 CEUs for Psychologists, Counselors, and Social Workers
Presented by Robert Weisz, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist
Director, Brainspotting and Hypnotherapy Clinic of New Mexico
“The human mind is a relational and embodied process that regulates the flow of energy and information......At the core of interpersonal neurobiology is our proposal that mindsight permits us to to direct the flow of energy and information toward integration.” -Daniel Siegel, MD, Mindsight, the New Science of Personal Transformation.
Recent research and literature in the new science of neurobiology has identified specific functions and actions in the human nervous system which support an attuned, effective healing relationship between patient and therapist.( See Daniel Siegel, 2007, 2010).
The application of the science of interpersonal neurobiology is related to the focused flow of information and energy in the brain through mindful presence in the therapeutic relationship. These developments have stimulated a new frontier in therapeutic interventions which is revolutionizing the field of psychotherapy. Brainspotting, which works by directly stimulating the processing of clusters of emotional memory within the brain, is one of the cutting-edge therapeutic modalities that shows great promise in the treatment of trauma and other emotionally charged memories and experiences.
This workshop will present the neurobiological science and practice that supports an attuned, focused therapeutic relationship in a variety of healing interventions. Methods for enhancing therapeutic attunement will be taught and practiced, based of the principles of mindsight as presented in the work of Daniel Siegel. Participants will learn to apply mindsight strategies to focus and empower the therapeutic interaction in the clinical setting.
Participants will then be introduced to, and have an experience of Brainspotting, and will learn to use self-Brainspotting to expand their ability to access and sustain a mindful, attuned state in their interactions with their clients and in everyday situations.
Training Seminar Objectives:
Through lecture, demonstrations, small group practice and experiential learning, participants will be able to learn and work with the following:
--A practical and theoretical understanding of the neurobiology of attunement, mindfulness, and mindsight.
--How to use the internal practices of mindsight to develop attunement with oneself and the client.
--The essential elements and functions of Brainspotting.
--The use of a simple self-Brainspotting technique to focus and enhance an attuned relationship with self and others.
This workshop is useful as an introduction or follow-up to the 2-day Phase 1 Brainspotting training. It is not a requirement nor a substitute for that training.
